This is an exciting opportunity in Columbus, Indiana for a Big Data Engineer. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading Big Data projects.

  • Develop an understanding of engineering business systems, industry requirements, and governmental requirements. Analysis of business and user needs, documentation of requirements, and translation into proper system requirement specifications.

  • Applies engineering and/or scientific skills and continues to develop experience in creating engineering solutions.


  • Engineering Solutions - Ability to plan, define, develop and launch small engineering systems in support of core organizational functions and business processes.

  • Requirements Engineering - Solid understanding of the process of determining that the product or process being designed is suitable for the purpose as defined by the stakeholders of the product or process

  • Develops Systems And Processes - Identifies and implements effective processes and procedures for accomplishing work. Solid understanding of how to develop systems and process. Applies systems and processes to improve and complete work at a team/departmental level. Works to eliminate system and process inefficiencies and roadblocks. Demonstrates consistent use of structured work documentation (e.g. communication channels, work steps, procedures, checklists, or flow charts).

  • Analyze Issues - Solid understanding of how to analyze issues. Demonstrates use of analysis skills to learn and analyze information in a timely way. Understands complex concepts and problems and identifies how they relate to key processes. Applies accurate logic in solving problems. Differentiates what is critical and what is important while not getting bogged down in details.

  • Communication - Written And Verbal - Is able to effectively and clearly communicate in both written and verbal means.


  • 1-3 years experience with Big Data open source tools or equivalent College project work

  • Position is accountable for development and maintenance of a Hadoop, "Big Data" distributed computing cluster on a cloud environment.

  • Candidates are expected to be proficient in this environment and its tools to effectively and efficiently process, store and make data available to analysts and other consumers.

  • Candidates must have a strong desire to grow expertise in Big Data tools and methods, and stay up to date on emerging software and technologies.

Unique Key Responsibilities:

  • Document/Define and Develop for Machine Data

  • Data Ingestion, Transformation and Storage for various, evergreen data sources.

  • Data Quality and veracity assurance methods, rules, measures.

  • Data Security processes and methods for controlling access to machine data including access to internal users/data sources as well as external users/data sources.

  • Automated reports and API’s for visualization and analytics tools.

  • Implement data models, data storage architectures and designs.

  • Implement system and data measures as well as alert mechanisms.

  • Participate in failure mode analysis and troubleshooting.

  • ODBC and SQL query language is desired.

  • Experience with IBM Big Insights, BigSQL and other IBM customizations of the open source products is a plus.

  • Experience implementing on a Microsoft Azure environment is a plus.

  • Familiarity developing for a Cloud-based environment, SFTP and large file movement protocols is required.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology required.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience plus annualized bonus potential.
