The Advanced Dynamic Systems and Control Department at Cummins at https://www.cummins.com/ Research and Technology is seeking a Senior Control Research Engineer in Columbus, IN to conduct research and development activities in the area of control and diagnostic system design, with emphasis on control technologies for advanced powertrain and connected vehicle systems. The successful candidate will join an exciting cross-functional team responsible for evaluating options and determining technical direction for strategically critical and new products at Cummins. The individual will be involved with proposing, designing and evaluating control system technology concepts, prototyping the system, control algorithms verification and validation, and vehicle integration for technology demonstration. Successful candidates will have a range of experience in controller algorithm development, research and application, together with more in-depth experience in one or more relevant technical areas either from university research work or professional experience. The Advanced Dynamic Systems and Control team is responsible for the development, evaluation, and implementation of new controls and diagnostics technologies for our future products; serving various business units of Cummins Inc.
Development of advanced control systems and algorithms for future products meeting increasingly demanding fuel economy, performance and emissions requirements. This includes dynamic characterization of the system, development of control oriented models, application of multivariable and advanced control design techniques and the ability to develop, prototype, verify and validate the new control algorithms.
Define requirements for system architectures and subsystems to enable adequate controllability and observability including hardware components, sensors and actuators, and control modules.
Perform simulation studies and complete analysis using plant models.
Collaboration with key stakeholders to understand and refine controls and diagnostic requirements through the development process.
Ability to develop physics-based and data-driven control-oriented modeling for dynamic characterization of the system, control design, and optimization.
Implementation of new control algorithms using a variety of rapid prototyping and embedded controllers to verify and validate the control system performance.
Participate as part of a cross functional team throughout the product development process toward the delivery of the project milestones.
Work effectively with cross functional peers, managers, and people in other teams.
Ability to independently analyze data, draw well-founded conclusions, and communicate results to a cross-functional audience.
Proactive in investigating and explaining unexpected data trends/results.
Ability to search and identify relevant publications and articles in different engineering communities e.g. IEEE, ASME, SAE and make recommendations accordingly.
Concise technical writing understandable to an intended audience.
Strong verbal communication and presentation skills, ability to clearly communicate ideas to a cross-functional audience.
Self-motivated with a strong drive for excellence and research in the field of controls systems engineering and research.
Education, Licenses, Certifications
- PhD or MSc in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or related field with a focus on control systems (PhD with focus in the desired research areas is preferred).
Two plus years of relevant work experience required
Strong knowledge and experience in the control systems theory, research and applications with emphasis on optimal control, MPC, DP and multi-variable control design.
Proven experience in analysis and design of control systems with emphasis on fuel efficient vehicle and powertrain optimal control, automated and connected vehicle technologies.
Experience in the development of model-based controls and analyzing the behavior of systems using simulation and experimental validation.
Familiarity with control system rapid prototyping and microprocessor based embedded control system implementation.
Experience in using Matlab and Simulink for control design and simulation.
Ability to develop physics-based and data-driven control-oriented modeling for dynamic characterization of the system, control design, and optimization with emphasis on vehicle and powertrain systems.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary commensurate with experience plus bonus.
