Corporate Counsel

Description

Responsible for handling a variety of legal matters or projects across a wide range of business, functions and subject matters appropriate to their level of capability and experience. Performs more complex legal work under supervision of more senior level counsel.

Performs legal work independently

Addresses a mixture of routine and more complex legal questions and projects

May assists more experienced attorneys in complex legal questions and projects that have broad reaching implications for the organization if the situation arises

Reviews standard documents and contracts, and prepares filings

Builds professional experience and learns the practical aspects of applied law, as well as the functions of the business

Demonstrates some proficiency in an area of law, specialty, function, or geographic region

Provides support or contributes to overall objectives and goals of organization

May supervise and/or mentor one or more paralegals or administrative assistants

May lead projects for the legal function

Education, Licenses, Certifications

Degree in law

License to practice law in home jurisdiction

Experience

Significant relevant experience required.

  • Strong background in commercial law with experience providing support to business partners on all aspects of the commercial.

  • Experience with complex commercial law issues on a regional or global basis.

  • Advise business on or effectively communicates key risks with financial impact and exposures related to commercial law matters; develops strategies aimed at mitigating identified financial risks.

  • Conduct training to business partners and team members on various commercial law matters; develop policies aimed at ensuring compliance with legal regulations, corporate policies, and customer commitments by the business partners.

  • Responsible for project and matter management with limited supervision; exercises independent judgment.

  • Shares in management of other members of the team as well as outside counsel relationships.

Additional Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • Qualified lawyer and educated to degree or postgraduate level.

  • At least 8 to 10 years post qualification experience with at least 5 years within a well-known law firm.

  • English as a first language or equivalent fluency; Portuguese and French is strongly preferred.
