This is an exciting opportunity in Columbus, Indiana for a Safety Engineer. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading Engineering projects.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Assists with the application and use of engineering controls to control hazards and reduce risks in the facility or site.

  • Helps to anticipate, identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices.

  • Develops basic hazard control designs, methods, procedures and programs.

  • Administers and communicates hazard control programs.

  • Interprets and applies internal and external standards in support of hazard reduction and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Fundamentals Of Health And Safety - omprehensive knowledge of occupational health & safety. Detailed understanding of general industry standards and the requirements of the more frequently referenced standards. Includes knowledge of basic health and safety concepts such as hazard and risk assessment, personal protective equipment, behavior based safety, machine/ equipment safety, confined space entry, etc.

  • Health & Safety Professional Knowledge (Inlcuding Regulatory Compliance) - Health & Safety Professional Knowledge relates to having comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and health compliance. Regulatory compliance deals with the regulatory requirements imposed on industry by local, state, provincial, national, and international organizations.Detailed understanding of how the provisions of the regulations, as applicable may be implemented in the workplace, rights and responsibilities under the various acts/ regulations/ rules, the appeals process, record keeping (OSHA), and Voluntary Protection Programs (OSHA). Understanding of general industry standards and the requirements of the more frequently referenced standards.

  • Occupational Health & Safety Management System - An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system provides a framework for managing OHS responsibilities so they become more efficient and more integrated into overall business operations. OHS management systems are based on standards that specify a process of achieving continuously improved OHS performance and compliance with legislation.

  • Risk Management - This skill involves health & safety management principles and system safety engineering techniques. This includes the elements of risk identification and management and an understanding of the function of hazard analysis in system requirements definition, preliminary and detailed design, test, operations, and maintenance activities. This skill includes an understanding of the function and application of hazard analysis tools and techniques in the correct system and engineering environment. This may include the application of hazard analysis tools.

  • Incident Investigation - The method of reporting the occurrence of an occupational injury/illness, near hit, or property damage. Incident investigations determine how and why these failures occur. Employees should be able to perform a thorough, effective incident investigation including root cause analysis, 5-why analysis and development of effective corrective actions.

  • System Safety - This skill involves safety management principles and system safety engineering techniques. This includes the elements of risk identification and management; understanding of the function of hazard analysis in system requirements definition, preliminary and detailed design, test, operations, and maintenance activities. System safety includes understanding of the function and application of hazard analysis tools and techniques in the correct system and engineering environment. This may include the application of hazard analysis tools.

  • Communication - Written And Verbal - Effectively expresses messages and ideas in a clear, organized and relevant manner for a variety of audiences. Develops organized, complete, and convincing communications. Conveys thoughts and ideas regarding a topic concisely and clearly. Ability to communicate without increasing either the employee's or employer liability. Ability to communicate effectively to different levels of the organization. Communicates information at a level appropriate for the intended audience. Effectively presents messages to individuals and/or small and large groups. Ability to communicate appropriately for various time zones, differing cultures, and differing languages. Uses appropriate style, grammar, and tone in informal and/or formal business messages. Reviews and edits written work constructively. Uses visual aids that are effective and appropriate for communication medium. Delivers messages with the desired effect. Prepares necessary support materials for meetings which may include agendas and/or pre-read documents. Uses appropriate tone and body language to deliver messages. Separates personal biases from fact. Expresses messages in a positive manner, focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses. Ability to use appropriate communication tools as needed (WebEx, SameTime, video conferencing, teleconferencing, Visio, MS Project, etc.).

  • Project Management - Project Management entails establishing and maintaining the Balanced Triangle of Scope, Schedule and Resources for a temporary effort (a project). This includes the phases of Planning, Implementation and Close-out. It includes the knowledge areas of Integrating/Balancing the Plan (Chartering, Contracting, and Managing Change), Managing the Team (Team Development, Team Meetings), Managing Scope, Managing Schedule, Managing Resources, Managing Risk, Managing Quality, and Managing Communication (Managing Metrics, Databases, Configuration Management,etc.). This skill is a consolidated skill of all the individual PM skills and does not spell out the detailed skills for effective project management. Those people with Project Management as a substantial part of their role should consider selecting the PM-specific roles (and detailed skills that come with them).

Experience

  • 1 to 3 years experience required.

  • Position will be expected to learn, develop and manage a limited amount of Environmental Functions.

  • Small Quantity Generator Hazardous Waste requirements and a Minor Air Permit and associated Exceptions.

  • Experience with manufacturing and machining of metal parts is preferred.

  • Team oriented work skills in the support of the overall Health, Safety and Environmental function.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience plus annualized bonus potential.
