This is an exciting opportunity in Shoreview, MN for a VPI Reliability Engineering Manager.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Manages single discipline staff engaged in various reliability engineering assignments and projects across the life of the new product development cycle, including the planning, implementing, tracking, reporting, and closure of the reliability program. Helps the program to balance the Cost/Quality/Delivery triangle and focus on three primary areas: the elimination of previous failures, the prevention of new failures, and the detection of current failures. Applies advanced knowledge of statistical and reliability tools to analyze existing and proposed component or system reliability, and report the reliability per the customer's reporting requirements.

  • Applies advanced knowledge of accelerated life testing and life data analysis techniques to statistically quantify the reliability impact of design changes. Manages the execution of new product reliability standard work to ensure products meet reliability targets, including new product reliability assurance, parenting and reliability improvement plans, design failure modes and effects analysis, design verification planning and reporting, failure reporting and corrective action systems, and new product reliability assessments.

  • Works with other engineering disciplines to resolve product issues. Evaluates customer needs and aligns specifications with identified customer expectations.

  • Leads a medium size technical group and works under broad direction.

  • Establishes employee performance standards; works collaboratively to set goals and to address areas of deficiency. Influences business-area leadership decisions.Manages financial controls and risk, ensuring operations are executed within established budget. Identifies issues, problems, and opportunities to support continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Formulates employee and department development plans for transferring technical knowledge. Coaches and motivates employees; provides guidance and direction on resolving problems and issues.

  • Delegates and assigns work, considering employee skills and development needs.

  • Advises leaders regarding the identification and resolution of complex problems.

  • Works with employees to establish their individual development and career plans.Assesses performance and provides feedback to direct reports.



Integrated Design Failure Mode And Effects Analysis (IDFMEA) - Ability to understand completed iDFMEAs, including interpretation of the boundary diagram, functional analysis, P-diagram and resulting areas of risk for the product. Uses the iDFMEA tool to logically organize complex cause-fail mode-effect relationships, appropriately identifies risk areas, and identifies and prioritizes actions necessary to mitigate risk. Ability to update existing iDFMEAs. Leads cross-functional teams in the creation of an iDFMEA and is able to facilitate iDFMEAs for a complex components, algorithms, and systems. Teaches and mentors new users in the application of the iDFMEA process and tool.

Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) - Leads the FIRG process for an organization and mentors others. Has experience in the setup and leadership of a the FIRG team to: establish the structure and participation, direct the database and logistic setup, and lead its implementation throughout a program. Has experience working with real problems through the 7-Step Product Process and can guide a team through the use of the problem solving tools as they relate to the process. Is able to train the 7-Step Product Problem Solving Process.

Parenting & Reliability Improvement Plans For New Products - Extensive experience performing parenting analysis. Is able to compute a parented reliability measure, compare to program target, and create a reliability improvement plan. Is able to deal with special circumstances, such as new hardware or subsystems which have no parents. In addition, specialists are able to coach users with their analysis.

New Product Reliability Analysis - Is familiar with new product reliability analysis methods, including reliability growth; their assumptions; and the results they produce. Can gather appropriate input data, produce failure rate estimates, and interpret results with the assistance of a specialist. Can identify cases with atypical results and work through them with the help of a specialist or expert.

New Product Reliability Standard Work - Leads the execution of reliability standard work for a new product development program and is responsible for the completion of the following activities: new product reliability assurance, parenting and reliability improvement plans, iDFMEA, DVP&R, FIRG, and new product reliability growth and assessments. Holds reliability functional reviews or presents similar content in technical functional reviews, including key reliability measures: reliability risk assessments, product release status, DVP&R completion status, reliability testing level of detection (RPH visibility), and FIRG nine box. Participates in workgroups for new reliability methods and tool development. Trains and mentors those at the awareness and user levels.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, University, or equivalent degree in Engineering required. Advanced degrees are a benefit.


5-10 years of relevant work experience required, including leadership of a small technical group.

  • Work with the TPL, Program Manager and Platform Quality Leaders to identify customer and product quality requirements.

  • Develop reliability plans to validate the product to the customers’ and engineering technical requirements.

  • Applies advanced knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the design, development, analysis and release of products and subsystems throughout the product introduction cycle.

  • Applies advanced data analysis skills as well as demonstrates a passion for robust engineering

  • Validates the product Value Package using analysis and or system testing, interprets results, drives decisions and assesses risk(s).

  • Works with other engineering and cross-functional disciplines to resolve program issues with specific action items and schedules for completion.

  • Work within engineering processes; identify needed improvements to increase engineering effectiveness, and champion continuous improvement. Provide expertise on Reliability Standard work (RSW) and guide teams with practical interpretation of the numerical results from the use of the tools.

  • Collaborates with System Engineering and Smart V&V teams to come up with robust Reliability plans and test methods, as well as improving the robustness of engineering practices and standard work.
