MaterialsScience Engineer

This applied materials position utilizes basic knowledge of materials science and engineeringprinciples and practices to identify and advance material solutions to achieve application, design, analysis, manufacturing and quality requirements. The position works cross-functionally on projects that require material science guidance on topics such as material and process selection, failure analysis, material characterization, and material and process expertise on questions pertaining to manufacturing and quality problems.

  • Investigates material and material processing problems, understands causal mechanisms,recommends appropriate action, actively contributes to problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.

  • Applies and supports the improvement of processes such as material and material processingvalidation, quality auditing, design validation and 7-step problem solving and utilizes the tools andtechniques for materialcharacterisation, material testing, non-destructive testing, mechanical andphysical properties measurement, simulation and statistical data analysis which are required toenable higher quality decision making.

  • Obtains input and negotiates with Quality, Supply Chain and Engineering functions and deliverstesting/analysis results and consultancy to these functions to enable internal and external customersuccess.

  • Makes decisions in the areas of material and material processing selection and optimization,qualification and inspection that impact product quality, reliability, durability and capability.

  • Applies and improves material specifications/standards in alignment with requirements, capabilityand quality needs.

  • Owns problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems orservices with a greater degree of technical complexity and ambiguity over the entry level engineerlevel and with greater accountability to the project team.

  • Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developingtechnology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.

  • Involves minimal direct management of people, but could involve the coordination and direction ofwork amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees.

  • Contributes effectively toward team goals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues todevelop proficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

MaterialsScience Chemist

This applied materials position utilizes basic knowledge of chemistry and its related industrialprocessesto identify and advance solutions that achieve customer, manufacturing and qualityrequirementsfor use in Cummins' products.

  • Investigates engine and subsystem chemical performance and chemical processing problems,understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, actively contributes to problemresolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.

  • Applies and supports the improvement of processes (such as chemical and chemical processingvalidation, quality auditing, design validation and 7-step problem solving) and the tools andtechniques (such as chemical characterization and testing, material characterization, measurement,simulation and statistical data analysis) required to facilitate the processes and enable higher qualitydecision making.

  • Obtains input and negotiates with Quality, Supply Chain and Engineering functions and deliverstesting/analysis results and consultancy to these functions to enable internal and external customersuccess.

  • Makes decisions in the areas of chemical and chemical processing selection and optimization,qualification and inspection that impact product quality, reliability, durability and capability.

Must be a full-time enrolled student pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree

Minimum3.0GPApreferred

Must be able to complete a minimum of12weeksand up to amaximum of52week commitment

Must be able to complete 40hours per week

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
