Senior Engine Fluids Chemist


We are looking for a talented Chemist to join our team specializing in Engine Fluids Chemistry for Cummins Corporate R&T in COLUMBUS, IN / your remote home office .

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • This applied materials position utilizes basic knowledge of chemistry and its related industrial processes to identify and advance solutions that achieve customer, manufacturing and quality requirements for use in Cummins' products.

  • Investigates engine and subsystem chemical performance and chemical processing problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, actively contributes to problem resolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced team members.

  • Applies and improves chemical-related specifications and standards to ensure current and changing requirements for conformance to capability and quality needs are clearly defined and followed.

  • Provides independent execution of established work processes and systems, while still developing technology or product knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.

  • Involves minimal direct management of people but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees.

  • Assist in non-routine investigations pertaining to engine fluid related failures and / or issues

  • Manage CMI Fluids Registration Test Services for Coolant including: test scheduling, customer communication, test logistics, preparation and review of test reports.


To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required. Post-graduate (Master’s degree) relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience

  • Prior entry level engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred

  • Strong understanding of organic chemistry

  • Familiar with analytical methods for fluid / materials characterization such as: chromatography, mass spectrometry, ICP-OES, FTIR, TGA, DSC, SEM-EDS, etc.

  • Basic understanding of polymer and metallic materials

  • Understanding of corrosion mechanisms and the prevention of corrosion via inhibition, surface modification, etc.
