This is an exciting opportunity in Cookeville, Tennessee for a Plant Quality Leader. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading engineering projects such as New Product Development, Value Package Introduction and Systems Product Validation.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

  • Supports the assigned Plant with continuous improvement toward defect-free processes that satisfy customer needs and achieve business results. Also responsible for the continuous improvement of the processes, tools, and capabilities of people within the Quality Function.

  • Manages the development, implementation, and maintenance of the plant Quality System.

  • Establishes and maintains quality assurance standards, procedures, and controls.

  • Manages the plant Quality function in the achievement of Cummins Operating System improvement objectives for the plant.

  • Provides functional leadership for achievement of Annual Operating Plan objectives at the plant.

  • Responsible for the quality of products produced and for work stoppages if a problem is discovered affecting the product.

  • Determines quality project priorities and allocates resources to accomplish the work.

  • Monitors improvement teams to ensure that goals are achieved and reported.

  • Ensures that quality assessments and audits are conducted in accordance with the plant Quality System.

  • Leads post-event reviews to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement.

  • May manage Value Package Introduction planning, prevention, and protection completion against manufacturing processes.

  • Champions Six Sigma standards and projects in the plant.

  • Leads the identification, analysis, and prioritization of potential improvement projects for the plant; tracks progress and results of selected projects; leads project completion audit process for the plant.

  • Manages and develops Quality Engineers and Calibration and Metrology team at the plant.


Skills and Experience Required:

Aiag Core Tools Expectation - AIAG Core tools are seen as being fundamental in support of the automotive preferred quality system ISO/TS 16949, and delivering satisfactory product quality.

Six Sigma - This skill is concerned with three disciplines: (1)TDFSS (Technology Development for Six Sigma): the systematic methodology of integrating statistical tools into the Product Proceeding Technology process in order to achieve predictive design quality and meet Voice of the Customer requirements. (2)DFSS (Design for Six Sigma): similar tools used in the product and process development work in order to achieve predictive design quality and meet Voice of the Customer requirements. (3)DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) Six Sigma: a disciplined approach to enterprise-wide quality and improvement and variation reduction using statistically-based tools.

Auditing Fundamentals - Auditing Fundamentals - This skill is related to all types of auditing except financial auditing. This skills includes knowledge of audit/assessment processes, receiving and providing training, actual participation in audits/assessments, leading and managing audit/assessment processes, and certification.

Cummins Operating System - Cummins Operating System (COS) - The understanding and use of continuous improvement through the lens of the COS ten practices. Includes knowledge of the COS practices and functions to support the business in continuous improvement.

Plan, Control And Assure Product And Process Quality - Processes for quality planning (e.g. Design Review), validation methods, and drawing interpretation. Principles of inspection sample plans, measurement types and selection of measurement tools, and metrology practices.

Problem Solving And Quality Improvement - Problem Solving and Improvement approaches, including understanding of tools/process type and selection, plus Corrective and Preventive Action processes.

Product Or Service Familiarization - Understanding of the product line or services of the specific business of which the person is a part (i.e., plant, performance cell, etc).

Quality Management And Leadership - Understanding the philosophies behind quality management. Application of management tools such as policy deployment, goal setting, planning, etc. Understanding customer satisfaction techniques.

Quality System Development, Implementation And Verification - Identify and integrate common elements such as design and process control, management responsibility, document control etc. Quality auditing planning, preparation and execution.


  • Significant relevant work experience required, including leadership experience.

  • Previous experience in a Manufacturing experience in a Quality role required

  • Experience in a union environment preferred

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent degree in required. Green Belt certification preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
