DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Test Operations Technician - Lab Ops to join our team specializing in Engineering for our DTO Product Development Department in Darlington, United Kingdom. 

This is an onsite role with a rotational shift. Rotating 4 Week Shift Pattern of 12 Hour Shifts (7am - 7pm / 7pm - 7am)

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Ensure Engine Test Readiness: Ready engines for test with all rigging requirements, ensuring alignment and setup meet specifications before testing.

  • Drive Test Efficiency Through Fault Diagnosis: By quickly identifying and fixing faults, you'll help maintain test momentum and minimize downtime.

  • Capture Critical Data for Engineering Insights: You'll prepare engines through supporting controlled teardowns and rebuilds. Record torque settings, backlash, and wear conditions, providing essential data for performance analysis.

  • Maintain and Optimize Test Equipment: Regular maintenance and fitting of components like prop shafts and exhausts will ensure test rigs are reliable and ready.

  • Support Accurate and Safe Engine Installations: You'll facilitate the installation and removal of engines in test cells, ensuring proper handling and alignment.

  • Promote a High-Standard Work Environment: Keeping the pre-test area clean and conducting 5S audits will contribute to a safe and efficient workspace.

  • Uphold Quality Standards (ISO17025): Your involvement in ISO17025 adoption will help ensure lab processes meet international quality standards.

  • Enhance Test Validity Through Instrumentation and Setup: Installing instrumentation and understanding test systems will ensure accurate and reliable test results.

  • Work shift patterns as required by 24/7 business needs

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Strong Mechanical Aptitude and Hands-On Skills: Practical in-depth knowledge and experience of diesel engines, both mechanical and electronic

  • Commitment to Quality and Safety Standards: Familiarity with ISO17025 and 5S practices will help you maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment that supports reliable testing.

  • Health and Safety Fundamentals - Champions and models proactive health and safety behaviors by identifying, reporting and participating in actions to improve health and safety in order to build an interdependent culture and contribute to an injury-free workplace.

  • Teamwork and Adaptability in a Fast-Paced Environment: You'll need to collaborate effectively with engineers and technicians, adapt to changing test plans, and support the smooth operation of test equipment and facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/ Experience:

  • Desired – NVQ/HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification, or extensive relevant experience gained through practical work

  • Computer literate, with user-level proficiency in relevant engineering and office software

  • Solid foundation in engineering, supported by technical knowledge acquired through education, training, or on-the-job learning

  • Significant engineering experience gained through industry roles or apprenticeship programs

  • Demonstrates an intermediate level of technical knowledge with the ability to apply it effectively in practical settings

  • Shows commitment to ongoing learning and professional development

The compensation for this role is aligned with a local bargained or unionised agreement.
