This is an exciting opportunity in Galesburg, Michigan for a Lead Electrical Engineer.

Description

This applied technology leadership position creates electronic hardware that is integral to Cummins’ products. People in these positions will typically develop and validate electronic sensors, actuators, control units or harnesses to ensure the consistent operation of Cummins’ products in a variety of customer applications.

The person in this position will lead the electrical engineering activity for harnessing interconnect systems on ECJV transmission products and subsystems. Some focus areas of this role will include transmission interconnect systems interfacing with ECUs, actuators, speed sensors, pressure sensors, and temperature sensors.

Investigates highly difficult or specialized electronic hardware problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results.

Creates, manages, improves and applies electronic hardware development processes and tools. Processes include basic problem solving techniques (5 phase, 7 step, 8D or similar), design for EMC robustness, design for manufacturing, familiarity with embedded electronic hardware development process, requirements analysis. Tools include worst case analysis, circuit simulation (Saber, Cadence PSpice, or equivalent), DFMEA/PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), schematic capture, PCB layout (Mentor Graphics, Zuken, or equivalent), Specification Compliance Matrix (or equivalent).

Obtains input and negotiates with electronic suppliers and software development teams and delivers prototype hardware to application engineering teams.

Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of hardware architecture, electrical design, and mechanical design that impact functionality, unit cost, and schedule.

Responsible for review of less-experienced developers/testers’ work to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design.

Responsible for coaching and developing the next generation of technical experts.

Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.

Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.

Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.

Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect).

Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.

May also include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.

Skills

Design and Application of Digital Electronics - Specifies components and architectures of electronic control units; applies electronic control units in Cummins' products.

Design and Application of Mechatronics Systems - Specifies electronic hardware and interconnections that measure and control systems; applies electronic hardware and interconnections in Cummins' products.

Mechanical Design of Electrical Systems - Creates electrical system or electronics-based design or architecture concepts through specific knowledge of electrified (or electrical-based) systems to ensure a system design that adheres to both Cummins and customer expectations.

Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

Product Verification and Validation Management - Coordinates the development of design verification and system validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes while managing risk and relative priority; evaluates analytical and experimental test results following engineering principles to verify that products meet internal technical requirements and to validate that design solutions meet customer needs; produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

Experience

Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s).

Knowledge of MS Office.

Specialized knowledge of electronic sensors, actuators, control modules or harnesses to ensure the consistent operation of’ commercial vehicle transmission products in a variety of customer applications.

Previous program management and commercial vehicle customer interface experience.

Proficient with use of DSFF tools such as P-diagrams, DFMEAs, DVP, Voice of the Customer, Design Score card, and Design of Experiments.

Specialized knowledge and proven expertise in electrical interconnect systems integrated with automated transmission systems.

Experience developing, testing, specifying, or integrating electrical interconnect systems with speed sensors, position sensors, pressure sensors.

Experience with high integrity vehicle communication links such as CAN and J1939.

Experience developing test and performance specifications for transmission electrical systems.

Experience with design and specification development of automated commercial vehicle transmission electrical systems.

Experience with Lean Design practices preferred.

Experience managing internal or external technical resource demand to achieve department goals.

Proven experience developing electrical connector, harness routing, strain relief / bracketing solutions in commercial vehicle applications.

Proven experience delivering electrical product cost reduction (VA-VE).

Experience managing supplier deliverables and assuring they meet requirements.

Deep understanding of transmission mechatronics systems and specifications.
