The Cummins Legal function provides a full range of legal services in support of Cummins Inc. and its consolidated businesses. Our United States staff is located in Columbus and Indianapolis, IN. We also have international legal offices located in Australia, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, among other countries. Through these various offices, we are able to support our businesses throughout the world.
This is an exciting Corporate Counsel - Labor and Employment opportunity based in Indianapolis, IN, that offers diverse in-house responsibilities including handling a variety of complex labor and employment law matters and projects across a wide range of businesses, geographical regions, and functions as a member of a global team.
Your impact will happen in these and other ways:
Support human resources and other internal business stakeholders in the U.S.Some international responsibilities as well
Advise and counsel on the rights and obligations of the company concerning a broad array of issues such as EEO and affirmative action law, traditional labor law, pension and benefits, internal investigations, etc.
Act as a trusted advisor to all levels of company management, providing legal and practical advice within appropriate business contexts
Influence or contribute to achievement of overall company goals and objectives
Develop and implement labor and employment best practices for the company
Assist with development and implementation of relevant policies, procedures, and training programs for HR and other internal business stakeholders
Provide real-time support to collective bargaining teams during union negotiations and partner with Corporate Labor Relations and business leaders to develop bargaining strategies in advance thereof
Engage in project and matter management inside and outside of the legal function
Manage and oversee external legal counsel performance across the full range of labor and employment issue areas
Assist with development and implementation of global legal strategies and initiatives
May supervise and/or mentor one or more junior lawyers, paralegals or administrative assistant
Act as a resource to others and a member of a global team
Deep understanding of employment law issues including, but not limited to, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, leaves of absence, Fair Labor Standards Act and other compensation issues, disability accommodations, performance management, employee mobility, and data privacy
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Employment litigation experience
Traditional labor experience (e.g., CBA negotiation and administration, grievances, arbitrations, union campaigns, etc.)
Excellent communication and advocacy skills
Good judgment and wise decision-making
Capable of handling multiple tasks and activities across a variety of challenging situations in afast-paced environment
Results-oriented with a stakeholder focus
Ability to work as part of a global team
Minimum of 5 years, prefer 7-10 years, experience in substantive employment and traditional labor law practice
Some employment litigation and/or labor arbitration experience required
Pension and benefits experience not required but a plus
A mix of in-house and private practice experience preferred but not required
Education, Licenses, Certifications
Degree in law
Licensed to practice law in at least one United States jurisdiction
Compensation and Benefits
Base annual salary commensurate with experience plus annual variable compensation.
