Intellectual Property and Technology Manager


We are looking for a talented Intellectual Property and Technology Manager to join our team specializing in sales for our #NewPower Business Unit in Mississauga, Ontario.

This engineering service focused, developing leadership position includes those who develop and maintain the information technologies, functional excellence or product information change management that enables the engineering practitioners to work more efficiently and effectively.

  • Investigates technical information and knowledge based infrastructure opportunities and challenges; understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results.

  • Architects, designs and/or provides support of information processes such as Engineering Standard Work, (ESW), Value Package Introduction (VPI), change management and data repositories such as technical information libraries, all required to meet the needs of practitioners within the technical function.

  • Obtains input and negotiates with a broad variety of technical practitioners to deliver new and revised processes and tools that advance the capability of the function and its ability to deliver high quality drawings and specifications.

  • Makes decisions, plans and implements new and revised processes, work instructions, software and/or computing solutions that improves the technical quality, efficiency and/or effectiveness of the technical function.

  • Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.

  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.

  • Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.

  • Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.



  • Technical Function Processes and Tools - Executes, improves, trains, coaches and/or manages the Technical processes and tools including standards and best practices that enables knowledge to be re-used and functional deliverables to be met in a quality and productive manner.

  • Solution Assessment and Validation - Assesses the proposed solution using the requirements traceability through the life cycle of the requirements to determine if they deliver the desired business outcome.

  • Requirements Analysis - Evaluates relationships and interdependencies between requirements based upon their complexity and value to the business in order to determine feasibility and prioritization.

  • Knowledge Management - Ensures perspectives, ideas, experiences and information are available in the right place and the right time using the required processes and tools to enable informed decisions.

  • Troubleshooting - Diagnoses and resolves the customer-identified issue by utilizing appropriate department standards to satisfy customer expectations.

  • Decision quality - Making good and timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward.

  • Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or Information Technology required.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.


  • Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s).

  • Lead the development and execution of an IP strategy for NPBU (or aportion thereof) that supports the business objectives.

  • Partner with the Legal, Business, and Engineering functions to establishand implement the key elements of the IP management framework across NPBU (or aportion thereof).

  • Partner with the Legal, Business, and Engineering functions to developand implement the IP protection approach that aligns with corporate policies,regional policies, and regional laws to maximize commercial benefits for NPBU.

  • Work proactively with Product Preceding Technology (PPT) (i.e.,technology development), Value Package Introduction (VPI) (i.e., productdevelopment), Value Package Change (VPC) (i.e. current product support), andAftermarket New and Recon Parts (NRP), as well as other customer support teamsto ensure that patent assets are appropriately protected and risks areeffectively managed from competitive IP.

  • Provide support for sole and joint development programs, such as byidentifying relevant IP portfolios/families and/or cultivating and protectingIP stemming from development and technology programs.

  • Provide support for monetizing IP portfolio, such as throughlicensing/sale and/or assertion initiatives, to maximize commercial benefits toNPBU and/or align with business objectives of NPBU.

  • Partner with IP leaders across Cummins Business Units to alignstrategies and share best practices.

  • Conduct prior art searches (e.g., patentability, landscape, invalidity,etc.), including identifying key competitors and IP owned thereby, to aid thebusiness in identifying new innovations/technologies, as well as potentiallyrelevant patents, published patent applicants, and other publications that arerelevant to assessing patentability of NPBU innovations and/orfreedom-to-operate risk of NPBU products.

  • Summarize and present overall patent status for major program/projectgate reviews.

  • Partner with Engineering programs to lead workshops to identify newinvention disclosure opportunities on key technology themes for

  • NPBU; and working with inventors to capture such disclosures in Cumminsdatabase.

  • Work with NPBU Invention Review Committees (IRCs) to review and validateinvention disclosures submitted to the IRCs. Lead IP Council meetingswith customers and development partners. Work with IRC Chair, outsidecounsel, and in-house IP counsel in support of the IRC and IP activities.

  • Provide IP training, guidance & direction to various Cumminspersonnel.

  • Miscellaneous projects and initiatives related to patent matters,including supporting the IP Functional Excellence development efforts.

  • Stay up to date on New Power global technologydirections as well as develop expert level knowledge of industry technologytrends as well as competitor technology directions.
