Testing and analysis of engine and engine related components for stress, strain, fatigue, noise and vibration work that involves conventional engineering practice, but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements. Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of principles and practices of related specialties.

Machine Design - Is able to carry out and coordinate a Machine Design project in a wide range of work situations. No guidance is needed and the skill can be applied at an advanced level. Is able to train and coach others in developing and applying this skill or procedure on a limited basis.

Stress Analysis - Guides designers through the process of calculating stress, strain and deflection. Teaches finite element analysts how to validate model results using hand calculations. Determines appropriate methods for applying loads and boundary conditions to finite element models. Works with Experimental Mechanics staff regarding advanced measurement techniques to validate stress calculations.

Failure Mechanisms - Experienced with applying thermal stress solutions to components. Able to lead a multidisciplinary team through the 7-step problem solving effort to resolve failures. Focuses on the engine conditions driving failures and how to set up and interpret rig and abusive engine tests to define root causes of the failures.

Probabilistic Design: Stress-Strength Interference - Performs stress-strength interference calculations within Excel spreadsheet tool. Works through the formulas to calculate reliability and/or maximum allowable mean stress. Is familiar with the spreadsheet tool.

Component & Systems Development Process - Trains or mentors individuals at the awareness and user levels. Able to improve the process and/or tools and to make recommendations based upon sound engineering principles. Able to identify road blocks or problems in the development process.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent required. Master of Science preferred for advanced work. PhD required for highly specialized areas such as computational noise.


Six or more years of experience in focused areas of technical expertise such as engine/generator components or sub-systems, structure stress analysis, finite element analysis, or design.
