This is an exciting opportunity in Shoreview, MN for an Engineering Leader - Power Generation Project Design & Implementation. Cummins USA is where you can work on industry leading engineering projects such as New Product Development, Value Package Introduction and Systems Product Validation.

Your impact will happen in these and other ways:

Manages single discipline staff engaged in various engineering projects and assignments.

Applies advanced knowledge of technical engineering principles and practices in the identification and understanding of client requirements to manage the development of technical specifications, implementing designs, and delivering high performance, low-cost equipment and system solutions integrated with customers’ solutions.

Interfaces with sales and marketing teams to design and deliver client solutions.

Manages the development and delivery of training on client applications.

Leads a medium sized technical group and manages team to implement leadership's vision.

Establishes employee performance standards; works collaboratively to set goals and to address areas of deficiency.

Influences business-area leadership decisions.

Manages financial controls and risk, ensuring operations are executed within established budget.

Identifies issues, problems, and opportunities to support continuous improvement initiatives.

Formulates employee and department development plans for transferring technical knowledge.

Coaches and motivates employees; provides guidance and direction on resolving problems and issues.

Delegates and assigns work, considering employee skills and development needs.

Advises leaders regarding the identification and resolution of complex problems.

Works with employees to establish their individual development and career plans.

Assesses performance and provides feedback to direct reports.



Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) - Has an extensive understanding of the Installation Review Process, including the tools and processes associated with the various markets. Is capable of identifying potential issues early in the process and can provide clear guidance to the customer on how to resolve this issues keeping in mind both the customers and Cummins best interested. Can teach others to perform IQAs.

Product Knowledge - Knowledge of products and product lines. Able to represent the features and benefits to sell the products. Able to recognize customer needs and suggest product applications to solve problems and create benefits for the customer. Able to teach others to formulate effective messages and represent the features and benefits of the product.

Cross-Functional Design Review - Recognized as an authority of cross-functional design review skill and is contacted regarding this skill by the rest of the organization and is able to train and coach others in developing and applying cross-functional design review and is considered the person to contact as the expert on this skill.

Set The Aim - Recognizes when assumptions need to be challenged to ensure effective execution of strategic plans; holds direct reports accountable for setting the aim. Guides leaders on how to create clear and compelling pictures, objectives and implementation plans; ensures key strategies in the organization have appropriate implementation plans and measurements.

Coach & Develop - Recognizes opportunities with direct reports to provide coaching; is constantly on the lookout for development opportunities for direct reports; over time, builds reputation for developing and promoting direct reports. Encourages leaders at all levels to make coaching and developing others a priority; guides leaders on how to effectively coach and develop others.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

College, University, or equivalent degree in Engineering required. Advanced degree or extended specific training are preferred. Internal candidates should be green belt certified or in the process.

Additional Skills Preferred:

Industrial Power Systems Applications: Knowledge in the application for such applications including standby diesel generator systems, combined heat and power (CHP) systems. Includes knowledge of the relevant codes and standards and the ability to meet such standards as NFPA 110, NFPA 99, UL891, UL1558, UL2200, ANSI Switchgear Standards, etc.

Power System Components: Good working knowledge of typical industrial control system components such as industrial generator sets, control relays, protective relays, power quality meters and transducers, networking equipment, PC’s, and associated software.

Commissioning of Power Systems: Knowledge and experience with commissioning paralleling generator sets, ATS, switchgear, and the associated control systems, balance of plant systems, CHP systems, and SCADA systems that automate such processes.

Communication Skills: Shall have the ability to communicate complicated technical solutions effectively to management, customers, and end users of paralleling systems projects. Be able to work with customers to solve complex application problems along with the project engineering teams and travel to customer locations to influence the application design.

System Operation & Protection for Low and Medium Voltage Applications – Experience in the application of both low and medium voltage applications. Provide and facilitate training to team members in the operation, protection, and design of these applications.

Electrical System Design and Protection – Experience in the design of electrical system overcurrent, utility intertie, and earth fault protection as it relates to paralleling systems and switchgear. Facilitate training team members in the application of protection.


Substantial relevant work experience required, including leadership of a small technical group.

Project Engineering Execution: Responsible for ensuring all engineering is completed on time and of high quality for custom projects in the scope of the Project Design and Implementation. Drive innovation, speed of execution, and continuous quality improvement to ensure customer satisfaction.

Cross Functional Engagement with Stakeholders and Customers: Work pro-actively to increase communications with internal and external customers including but not limited to: Manufacturing, Distribution, Engineering Development, Sales Support, Project Management and Business Development.

Capacity Planning: Understand work load requirements for customer orders and plan capacity accordingly. Model the required capacity needed for each line of business in the PD&I department and understand required engineering capacity and effort for each project type.

Capability Development and Employee Engagement: Ensure that the engineering team is constantly improving capabilities through focused training, on the job opportunities and coaching/mentoring to ensure capability depth across the portfolio. Track and update management on the investment of this responsibility.

Sales Support and Project Design: Proactively engage with Distribution Sales, Territory Managers, Upstream Influencing, and Internal Sales to design integrated systems projects for diesel and lean burn natural gas generators that minimize cost, increase reliability, ensure on time delivery, and differentiate us from the competition. This will include on-board approvals, customer site visits, customer witness tests, conference calls, etc.

Sub-System Engineering Design Leadership: Develop subsystem design expertise for the project design business for balance of plant equipment including but not limited to: Enclosures, fuel systems, exhaust systems, heat recovery systems, cooling systems, power system protection and control, switchgear, and diesel generator accessories.

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
